What is Diabetes mellitus?
High blood sugar (glucose) levels that result from defects in insulin secretion, or its action, or both- if diabetes is untreated and poorly controlled it will lead to short term complications ( coma, infections) and long term complications ( neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy )
Types
- Type 1- insulin dependent due to damage of insulin producing cells (insulin deficiency)
- Type 2- non-insulin dependent (lifestyle related, insulin resistance) more common
- Specific types of diabetes due to other causes
- Gestational diabetes mellitus
Type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Usually asymptomatic and chronic illness
- Many patients present with complications
- Requires screening
- Early diagnosis helps in better sugar control and avoiding of long-term complications
